10. Malamaal Weekly (2006)

Directed by  :  Priyadarshan
Starring        :  Om Puri, Paresh Rawal, Rajpal Yadav

The plot of the movie is taken from Waking Ned Devine. The film was rated poorly by most reviewers, but was a surprise hit among cinema-goers.

The film takes place in the impoverished village of Laholi, where, following past droughts, most of the villagers' possessions are mortgaged to the local Thakurani Karamkali (Sudha Chandran). One of the few entertainments the villagers can afford is the lottery.
Lilaram (Paresh Rawal) is the only educated man in the village, and has the job of intermediary between the lottery organisation and the village, for which he receives only a commission whenever a villager wins; thus he has a relatively good but volatile income. One day he reads the winning lottery numbers and realises that one of the tickets has won the top prize of one crore (about $220,000, a relative fortune in rural India). He devises a plan to obtain the winning ticket and present it to the commission as his own.

Despite the poor reviews, the movie was a surprise success at the box office. It's basically a film for the "aam janta" (common people) would enjoy due to its hilarity. Reviewers would pan the movie as "bad" due to their mindset as the "reviewer" and not watching it with the "common man" mindset. As of April, the film was the top grosser in Delhi  and has made Rs 120 million (about $2.6 million) overall. It was a low budget file of Rs 60 million.

Each of them tries various ploys to eliminate his rival, all of which fail ludicrously. In the end, Amar and Prem agree to join forces, insinuate themselves into the heiress' household, and there compete for Raveena's love.

Within 10 days of its release, the film crossed the INR 1 billion mark in India and became the first film of 2009 to do so.

The film also uses real inventions by little known people in India's backyards. The brains behind the innovations were Remya Jose, a student from Kerala, who created the exercise-bicycle-cum-washing-machine, Mohammad Idris, a barber from Meerut district in Uttar Pradesh, who invented a bicycle-powered horse clipper, and Jahangir Painter, a painter from Maharashtra, who made the scooter-powered flour mill

While Farhan and Raju are average students from modest backgrounds, Rancho is from a rich family. Farhan wants to become a wildlife photographer, but has joined engineering college to fulfil his father's wish. Raju on the other hand wants to uplift his family fortunes. Rancho is a wealthy genius who studies for the sheer joy of it. However, Rancho's passion is for knowledge and taking apart and building machines rather than the conventional obsession of the other students with exam ranks.
